Project Description:

This project will create an ongoing learning experience for our 7th grade Life Science students(250+ annually) in the Plum Borough School District/Oblock Jr High.

The purpose of this project is to allow students to create/use a web based dichotomous key to identify native trees planted on the school grounds.

The first step in completing this project is to select the most appropriate trees to plant. I am leaning toward native conifers to ensure an appropriate level of identification difficulty throughout the seasons. However, an expert opinion is welcomed.

The second step is to secure funding to purchase the trees.

Next, the trees need to be planted in the most appropriate location.

Finally, a dichotomous key will be created on paper and developed into a web-based version by students.

I foresee this project beginning with 7 – 10 trees. However, the project could be expanded by adding new trees annually. This would also give future students an opportunity to update the web based key.

When learning Life Science, it is imperative that the students have firsthand observations of living specimens. In many cases, it is impractical, if not impossible, to actually bring the students in contact with the natural world. While textbooks, videos and computers attempt to connect students with nature, nothing can replicate a firsthand experience. The Oblock Evergreen Collection would supply our students with the opportunity to be outside in nature without leaving school grounds. It would give teachers a unique and valuable resource to be used in a variety of hands-on lessons.
Research shows that students retain information better when it is gained as part of a unique and memorable experience. The Oblock Evergreen Collection would afford students this type learning experience.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am looking for help in two forms. First, I would like some advice from someone with a background in botany to recommend which trees or plants to include in our collection. I am sure I could choose some on my own, but having the input of an expert would greatly add to the project.

Second, I would like someone proficient in web design to help construct the dichotomous key. Again, I can muddle through it using MSFrontPage, but I'd like to add some sophistication from an expert. If possible, perhaps someone could develop an application for mobile devices.
