Project Description:

During a unit on the Cardiovascular system, after familiarizing themselves with the structure of the heart and fetal and adult circulation, my students will perform two "surgical procedures" on a sheep heart: coronary bypass surgery and a correction of the patent ductus arteriosus. This activity is part of one developed by the Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers. I will purchase sheep hearts but would request professional assistance from a physiologist or cardiologist. If monies are available, the project can be extended to include a study of heart worm microfilariae and the effects of adult heartworms on the pulmonary artery. I would need a donation of approximately $200.00 to include this activity.
