- Project Description:
This project is based on the Future Cities program, a program designed to involve science students in engineering. The class is working together to develop a city sometime in the future that:
* Is self-sustainable (as much as possible); this means most food needed for the city is grown locally, that the city has residential, industrial, recreational, and educational areas in place to support the needs of the citizens.
* That the energy used is to power the city is from renewable resources.
* Public transportation is provided for the citizens.
* That resources used in the city are sustainable (raw materials for industry, waste water is captured, sanitized, then recycled, etc.).
I am looking for individuals with experience in green building design, alternative energy sources,environmentally-friendly waste water treatment systems, or city planning.
The class takes place at a private school with four 6th grade students. We meet twice each week for one hour each time(Wednesdays and Fridays). Each student has chosen an area of focus for the project. I've provided each of them with videos and print materials relating to their chosen area, and now we are trying to put the information into practice by building a scale model. Our goal is to have the project complete in time for our school science fair on April 30th.
Depending upon your area of interest and experience, it might be possible to make connections to projects going on in other grade levels. For example, our 4th grade students are researching different processes that change the Earth's surface and are creating hands-on demonstrations for the rest of the class. Our third grade class has embarked on developing a recycling program for the building, and are going to begin using some recycled materials to explore making musical instruments (learning how sound works). Our 5th grade students are learning about simple machines and will be using what they have learned to create Rube Goldberg machines.
