Project Description:

Kindle Our Kids Curiosity - National Lab Day Part 3

The Kindle 2 eReader and is absolutely amazing and I am happy to say that we are half way to our goal of putting a Kindle in each of my student's hands! The Kindle is 21st Century technology at its best. The Kindle hold hundreds of books and is able to access them with the touch of a button!

I am a veteran special education teacher who created this project for National Lab Day to promote technology education. I work in a Title 1 (Low Income) School in Virginia that serves many military families. My students are sweet and enthusiastic learners with special needs that include Specific Learning Disabilities, Developmental Delays, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other health impairments. My students thrive with any new technology introduced to them. That is why I want to put a Kindle in each student's hands."

My Project
The Kindle e-Reader has this great text-to-speech audio function that helps address the challenges that many of my special needs students face such as vision problems, language barriers, and lack of reading fluency. Research has demonstrated that audio books promote reading and fluency so the Kindle’s audio function could be invaluable for my special-needs students. My kids need to hear as well as see the printed word. Using audio books is not new in my classroom setting. I already use mp3 players, but the Kindle kicks it up a notch to a new really tech-savvy level. And the idea that we aren't cutting down more trees is really appealing to me. Our school system has introduced an energetic recycling program and this technology would fit right in with the "greening" of our school.

Won't you help me bring my goal for this National Lab Day Technology Project to fruition by putting Kindles into each of my special needs students' hands? The kids love the Kindles we already have through our first two projects. Having a Kindle for each student would encourage my students to become more avid readers and promote life-long learning. I appreciate your consideration and hope you can help.
