Project Description:

The Free Music School in South San Jose provides free instrumental music lessons to students in grades 4-8. We are seeking one-time, or longer-term volunteers to help students learn how to play their musical instrument.
Classes are held on Fridays, between the hours of 4-6pm.
Studies have shown that over 80% of high-tech professionals have played a musical instrument. Our students could use professional role models,as part-time volunteers, to show them not only how to master the math of music, but what music can do to open their minds to higher-level thinking. We would love to work with your volunteers who have formerly played: violin, cello, piano/keyboard, or any band instrument (drums, trumpet, flute, sax, trombone, french horn, tuba, etc.)
Our Free Music School is staffed completely with volunteers. They are not professional teachers, but former and current musicians who use a practice book as their curriculum. Our program has been going strong for over 4 years. After the "beginning" class, where students master the basics of their instrument, they move to the "intermediate" or "advanced" class. Because we exist solely on donations, we have a limited supply of sheet music. Monetary donations to our program would be used to purchase sheet music for our students. We are trying to teach them about copyright laws at a young age, and do not make photocopies of music. Each piece costs approximately $50. If possible, we would like to purchase 6 new pieces for the groups.

In addition, we would also like to advertise more throughout the area and, hopefully, inspire other volunteer groups to start similar program. We could use funds for printing fliers to be distributed throughout the local schools and community centers. We also maintain a website: www.freemusicschool.com .
