Changing Expectations Corp at http://changeexpectations.org/ is seeking small-group STEM presentations and mentors for African American, Hispanic, and traditionally underserved students and their parents and teachers in East Austin and Central Texas.
We are looking for STEM professionals to mentor during small-group learning activities and to provide resources to purchase materials to send students home with individual project kits on related STEM topics. Digital and face-to-face follow-up mentoring of under-served students and their teachers and parents is anticipated.
Changing Expectations Corp STEM sessions during the 2010-2011 school year were held on November 13, 2010 at Connally High School (Pflugerville ISD), December 11, 2010 at Garcia Middle School (Austin ISD), January 29, 2011 at Dailey Middle School (Del-Valle ISD), and April 30, 2011 at Dobie Middle School (Austin ISD).
STEM sessions were also held during the 2011-2012 school year--October 15, 2011 at LBJ High School, November 18, 2011 at Covington Middle School. An FTC Robotics Team was hosted by Changing Expectations Corp at Austin Can Academies during January and February, 2012, as well as for an Aerospace Engineering Academy at LBJ High School from February through May, 2012. On Monday, April 9, 2012, the Real World Design Challenge Team went on a STEM Tour of UT-Austin's Aerospace Engineering Program and Pickle Research Campus. The 2012-2013 Changing Expectations STEM program supports Dessau Middle School in Pflugerville ISD and Lanier High School in Austin ISD. Both schools are preparing FIRST robotics teams for regional competitions with the support of the University of Texas Austin Student Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and National Instruments.
