Project Description:

I run after school STEM programs in high poverty middle schools in Seattle. We serve girls in some schools, and underrepresented students in other schools. I have run 5-10 week classes at five middle schools in Seattle. All the programs, equipment and supplies are free to the schools.

I would like to host a simultaneous lab day in May at five middle schools for 20 students at each school. In order to do this, I need some additional adult or college scientists to help with the program. I have high school students who mentor and teachers at the target middle school who also help.

I could help the visiting scientist show their field of expertise by developing a hands on lab appropriate for the students to conduct. The scientist could conduct units I have developed for the students. I have units on energy, environmental sciences, chemistry, and computer programming with Scratch.

I need scientists to help with the one day program in May. I need more scientists on a weekly basis to help with the program so I can expand it to more schools. It is also an asset to have college women in STEM fields to help provide mentoring to the high school and middle school students. Since I am self-funded, I always need consumable supplies. I do have a set of 10 older Dell laptops for the computer programming.
