Project Description:

CHEL (Charles Hubbard Environmental Lab) Revitalization

Issue:
Charles Hubbard donated approximately 2 ½ acres of land behind Derby Hills Elementary to Derby Public Schools as an outdoor classroom in 1989. For nearly 20 years, the site has been allowed to demonstrate true succession. Originally, the site was developed with a shrub, grassland, wildflower, forest, and wetland area. There are two bridges that connect the east and west sides. Minimal curriculum has been developed for the area. Teachers have not used the area for instructional purposes in many years due to the abundance of poison ivy, weeds, overgrowth, and ticks (just to name a few).

Goal:
When hired by USD260, I fell in love with the outdoor area and envisioned the area thriving as a district outdoor classroom. My goal is to re-establish the area as an outdoor classroom and certify it as a district level OWLS site (Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site). Specifics of the project include:
• Clearing brush and trees
• Removing trash
• Redirecting stream flow
• Removal of debris from stream
• Planting of native grasses, flowers, shrubs
• Building wildlife habitats
• Establishing an outdoor “classroom” area with gravel
• Rebuilding benches and bleachers
• Painting/repairing bridges
• Establishing paths throughout area
• Developing curriculum

Experience:
For nearly 15 years, I have taught science and most recently wrote a College Environmental Science Textbook. My passion and love of the outdoors is evident in my actions and words.

Value to school/district:
The revitalization of the CHEL will provide the district with a viable outdoor classroom for all content areas. Specific curriculum units will be developed that align with state standards. In addition, students will be exposed to experiential learning, problem solving skills, and many other 21st century skills. Another benefit will be for the community. The area will no longer be an eye sore and community members will enjoy the wildlife.

Resources:
The list of resources is nearly endless. There will be various organized clean up days for district and community members. Many of the resources are a joint effort between USD260 operations and the City of Derby.
