Project Description:

Botanists, Zoologists, Water and Soil Scientists, meteorologists are needed to collaborate with classroom teachers of earth, life and physical sciences to plan and implement outdoor education projects in multiple disciplines within environmental science. The campus of Williamstown Middle School in Gloucester County, NJ has an environmental walk, a butterfly garden, a man-made pond, a vegetable garden, a greenhouse, and 2 retention basins. All of these areas are in the beginning stages of being developed into outdoor education areas. Our activities could include any of the following: populating the man-made pond with living plants and animals and installing a water filter system. Planting tomatoes and starting a composting program from our cafeteria. Designing and installing a convection heating system in a small greenhouse. Plant inventory of the nature walk and basins. Water quality testing of the basins. Macro-invertebrate identification of populations in the basins. Installation of a weather station. Work would commence Spring 2010 and continue until school closes in June. Student volunteers would tend the vegetable garden and the pond over the summer.
