- Project Description:
We are attempting to launch a science research academy at our high school. Our goals are to have all of our students complete 4 years of science and an independent, original research project compatible with a science fair. Toward this end we would like to rebuild our research lab with new computers and new sensor equipment, get training on the use of computerized construction tools such as lasers and routers, and recruit teachers to be research mentors as part of their regular duties.
We would also like to fund both professional development opportunities for teachers (asking the entire department to join a professional society and attend a conference) and field trips to students to research labs and observatories in the Bay Area.
This proposal is wide-ranging and involves every kind of science offered at our school. A student in the academy will be asked to pick a strand that will lead to an area of specialization such as biology, astrophysics, math, engineering, etc. For example if a student opts for a biology strand, they will take Biology, AP Biology, Physiology, and Medical Terminology.
We have had some success with our Earth-science and space academy for the past several years, and this proposal will expand that program to encompass more student interests.
It is an ongoing project, intended for launch this fall (fall 2010).
