STEM Professionals Profile
I'm Deb Moore-Frey. I am a physicist who began work in the Aerospace industry back in 1979, and except for a brief period from 1985 - 2000, have continued to work with satellite systems and operations.
From '85 - 2000, however, I taught - primarily 8th grade science, with a smidge of prealgebra, art, language arts and history. My kids were from a lower socio-economic area, with an average of 3rd grade reading and 2nd grade math skills - and I taught in a portable classroom with no running water. Needless to say, it took a bit of concentrated effort to teach physical science and prealgebra under those conditions!
I heavily leveraged my aerospace experience to create lessons that developed science and technology skills that would be useful to the kids in both high school and the workforce.
These days, although working for the Air Force developing satellites and analyzing satellite data, I still try to volunteer several times a year at several schools. The lessons range from planetary exploration to chemical reactions at a varety of knowledge levels. I love the challenge of applying my expertise to the education standard being addressed in the teacher's classes.
