Iowa STEM Symposium (Iowa City, IA)
Participants in this event included 150 middle school students, 17 middle school teachers, and 30 community partners and many scientists. Kids chose one of four thematic areas and twenty seven different activities. Sample activities: CSI-like investigation of a food born illness, test drive with the National Driving Simulator; manipulation of Virtual Soldier.
Teachers were able to talk to community partners and scientists about their needs, barriers to education, and ways community partners can help them. Among those listening were representatives of business, government, and colleges/universities. As a result, a number of partnerships were initiated.

Dinner with a Scientist

Over 250 students, scientists and teachers gathered at the Oakland Zoo in celebration of National Lab Day with Oakland Unified School District. The format was part career day, part prom and part speed dating. Scientists included researchers from UC Berkeley, engineers from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and chemists from Chevron.

Water Sustainability Chemistry Lab New York, NY

Teacher Joe Vicente, of East Side Community High School, working with chemical engineering Professor Ben Davis of Cooper Union College were joined by members of the Creative Coalition, Chancellor Joel Klein and Beth Noveck of the White House to celebrate an ongoing effort to study water quality issues. Students filtered water, which the principal, Mark Federman, sampled at the end of the experiment.

Charlie Bolden spent time explaining Newton’s laws to Ms. Hedgepeth’s 5th grade class and demonstrated a hands-on rocket building project to the students. Administrator Bolden spoke about the importance of National Lab Day at the event.

Sartartia Middle School Students Participate In National Lab Day

Over 70,000 students in Fort Bend Independent School District participated in National Lab Day by taking part in the "SortItOut" lab!
"SortItOut" introduced students to the engineering behind industrial sorting processes.

Washington DC Area Events Celebrating National Lab Day on May 12!
Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School will “open their doors” to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as part of an all-day celebration of STEM learning.
Banneker High School will host OSTP Director John Holdren and NASA space scientists as part of an effort to learn more about the physics of crater development in the solar system.
Lincoln Middle School will host NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco and the amazing SpelBots from Spelman College (along with Dr. Andrew Williams) to work with an all-“girlz” science class.
Thomas Jefferson High School will host Aneesh Chopra, Federal CTO and David Kappos, Director of the US Patent and Trade Office as part of an ongoing look at technology and education.
Roosevelt High School will welcome Dr. Steven Koonin, Under Secretary for Science, Department of Energy as part of their bridge building project.
Howard University Middle School for Math and Science will host the SpelBots and Russlyn Ali, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Department of Education, to work with their Junior Bison Bots on hands-on robotics.
