“The future is in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We have a long ways to go in this country and in this state. We need to produce more and better qualified math and science teachers. The UC is doing a great deal of that with its Cal Teach program. It’s important to the economy. We’re not going to be lowest-cost producers. We’re not going to be a low tax state. We’re not going to be a state that has unregulated industries. So we need to live by our brain power – our inventiveness, and our capacity to invent new products and new services and market them around the world, and that’s where STEM education comes in.”
