I enthusiastically support National Lab Day as an important way to underscore the importance of science, math, and technology education for today’s students. Astronaut Sally Ride once said that “Math is the language through which the Earth speaks to us.” Increasingly we need individuals who know how to listen and respond to that language in order to solve our increasingly complex environmental challenges. And the Nobel Prize winning scientist Barbara McClintock, a visionary in plant genetics, spoke of the importance of having a “feeling for the organism.” One cannot have a feeling for an organism — whether that be a plant, human, or animal, without knowing the laboratory sciences of chemistry, biology, math, physics, and the technology that combines these disciplines. Students with strong math, science, and technology backgrounds are those best poised to assume leadership positions in the world. Supporting National Lab Day can help make this a reality.
